Fish needs food to perform its metabolism. Fish in nature eats whenever it is hungry but when it comes to artificial feeding of the fish in your aquarium you need to know certain things to keep the fish alive and healthy. They food requirement such as the amount and type of each fish varies to each species and it is important for you know about the food requirement of your fish.
In most of the cases the fish needs only once to be fed and it should be fed in two minutes as long as enough nutrients are provided. You can feed the fish any time of the day except for the nocturnal fish which needs be fed in the dark. In case of herbivore fish, it should be fed frequently in small quantities since it cannot hold lot of food in its stomach and it should to given fresh plant to nibble on all day.
Generally the food of the fish is classified into two types
- Live food
- Processed food
Live food
Plants, animals and microorganisms are the live foods provided to the fishes. They live in the tanks until the fish feeds on them. Most carnivores have little of live food while the herbivores veraciously feed on them. The live food you provide should have all the nutrients required for the fish.
Processed food
The categories of processed food available are
- Fresh
- Frozen
- Freeze-dried
- Canned
Fresh food includes the meat and vegetable that have gone through minimal processing. Frozen foods are available in great variety. The freeze dried food not advised, since in the process of making them the vitamins available are lost. Canned foods are the most used food since it provides nutrients to make a whole diet.
