Petclav is a potentiated penicillin approved for veterinary use in dogs and cats. It combines the broad-spectrum antibiotic activity of Amoxycillin with the unique β-lactamase-inhibiting effect of Clavulanate Potassium for antimicrobial activity. In addition, it provides activity against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.

Amoxycillin trihydrate is a semisynthetic antibiotic with a broad spectrum bactericidal activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative, aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms.

Amoxycillin is bactericidal in action and acts through the inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall mucopeptide of susceptible organisms.

Petclav is stable in the presence of gastric acid & is not significantly influenced by gastric or intestinal contents. The 2 components are rapidly absorbed resulting in Amoxycillin and clavulanic acid concentration is serum, urine and tissue similar to those produced when each is administered alone.

Petclav diffuses readily into most body tissues and fluids with the exception of brain and spinal fluid, which amoxycillin penetrates adequately when meninges are inflamed.

Petclav combines the distinctive properties of a broad spectrum antibiotic and a beta-lactamase inhibitor to effectively extend the antibacterial spectrum of amoxycillin to include betalactamase-producing aerobic and anaerobic organisms.

Petclav has shown to have broad spectrum activity which includes beta-lactamase-producing strains of both gram-negative and gram-positive aerobes, facultative anaerobes, and obligate anaerorbes.
